For those with lactose intolerance, finding dairy products that are comfortable to consume can be a challenge. Kefir, a fermented milk drink, is often discussed as a potential option. But can people who are lactose intolerant actually enjoy kefir without discomfort?

Understanding Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance occurs when the body produces low levels of lactase, the enzyme required to digest lactose, the sugar found in milk. This can lead to symptoms like bloating, gas, and diarrhea after consuming dairy products.

What Makes Kefir Different?

Kefir is made by fermenting milk with kefir grains, which consist of bacteria and yeast. The fermentation process breaks down much of the lactose found in milk. Therefore, kefir typically contains lower levels of lactose compared to regular milk. A man, appearing uncomfortable, is gesturing to refuse a glass of milk placed on a table in front of him, possibly indicating lactose intolerance or a dairy sensitivity.

Potential Benefits of Kefir for Lactose Intolerance

Research suggests the bacteria and yeast cultures in kefir not only reduce lactose content but may also help improve lactose digestion. Some studies indicate that the gut-friendly cultures in fermented dairy can enhance lactase enzyme activity in the gut.

How to Test Your Tolerance

If you’re lactose intolerant and curious about trying kefir, start with a small amount to see how your body reacts. Monitor any digestive symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider if you are unsure about introducing kefir into your diet.

While individual tolerance can vary, many people with lactose intolerance may be able to enjoy kefir with fewer symptoms due to its reduced lactose content. As a nutrient-rich, *probiotic food, kefir might be a valuable addition to your diet, offering benefits beyond lactose digestion.

A Personal Story from Our Founder, Mary-Thea Brosnan

“I was diagnosed with IBS in my mid-20s, I had eliminated dairy from my diet to manage my symptoms, a change that significantly impacted my lifestyle. After seven dairy-free years, I discovered kefir. I was a bit hesitant due to its dairy base, but I decided to experiment with making it myself. To my astonishment, within a week, I experienced a profound improvement in my digestion—It completely transformed my digestion!

I continued to avoid dairy, with the exception of kefir, until the onset of the pandemic. During this period, I began to reintroduce other dairy products into my diet, starting with yogurt and eventually adding ice cream and cream. Thankfully, I no longer experienced the negative effects that I had before. After seven years of consistent kefir consumption, I confidently feel that my lactose intolerance has significantly diminished.

Today, I enjoy a variety of dairy products in moderation, though I’m cautious not to overdo it. I still avoid drinking milk directly, as I’m unsure of my tolerance levels for it. But the freedom to enjoy foods I once had to avoid has been a great joy. It’s gratifying to hear that many of our customers have shared similar experiences, finding that kefir allows them a wider dietary range without discomfort.

These personal experiences fuel my passion for kefir and our mission at Kerry Kefir—to provide a traditionally-made product that may help others in the same way it helped me.”
